Description

Here is a rare chance to own a slice of classic mid-century modern history at an affordable price! With 1,312 square feet of living space, this 1950 home in Hollin Hills, Alexandria was designed by Charles M. Goodman, one of the preeminent progressive architects of the era and the creative force behind the community. A curved driveway sweeps in off Drury Lane, revealing a secluded Shangri-La of contemporary style. The split-level home with its low-pitched roof and wide overhangs is on an ungraded 0.34 acre lot, surrounded by lush vegetation and wild beauty. A massive chimney spans almost the width of the cubist-inspired house. Inside, the main living area embraces the great room concept with polished hardwood floors and an entire wall of uninterrupted floor-to-ceiling windows. It~s the classic modernist ethos of inviting the outside in!At one end of the large open space is a wide brick hearth, fireplace and matching firewood storage box, with Atomic Age wood paneling to the side. An open contemporary kitchen with finished concrete floor has been upgraded with stainless steel appliances and custom cabinets. There are two bedrooms on the lower level with new carpeting as well as huge window walls and glass doors leading directly outside. The two upstairs bedrooms have been opened up into one massive master sleep space with hardwood floors. In short, the entire home retains the classic Goodman mid-century modern feel. All it needs is some additional TLC, reflected in the as-is price. DescriptionsThe one-third acre lot itself is an inspiration, with mature trees, bamboo, patio, koi pond and rustic low brick walls coiling around the periphery. A cool storage cabin is tucked away in back and a charming wooden walkway leads to Voight Park next-door. One of the defining principals of Hollin Hills has always been the merging of home and nature. Close your eyes, take a deep breath and listen to the bird songs.

Alexandria - Parkway/Ft. Hunt

The area takes its name from a post-Civil War era fort constructed near the banks of the Potomac River that was intended to compliment the defenses of Washington, DC with Ft. Washington on the opposite side of the river.  Ft. Hunt was even home to a top secret military intelligence operation during World War II.  While no shots were ever fired in anger, the remains of the facility are the centerpiece of the sprawling Ft. Hunt Park.  The George Washington Parkway is a beautiful ribbon of road that runs through the community towards George Washington’s Mt. Vernon to the south, offering incredible vistas of the Potomac River.  There are beautiful communities of primarily single family detached homes to the west of the Parkway, including Hollin Hills, a neighborhood of roughly 450 homes designed by Charles Goodman immediately after World War II.  It is considered a landmark of contemporary design.

Quality of Life:

Parks, scenic vistas of the Potomac River and the walking and biking trail that runs from Mt. Vernon to Rosslyn right through Ft. Hunt are the anchors for this beautiful community. While there a handful of townhomes, almost every dwelling is a detached home, ranging from 1950's construction to magnificent new homes overlooking the river. And the incredible variety of shops and restaurants of Old Town are just minutes away up the Parkway.

Getting Around:

There’s no better drive in the metropolitan area than the beautiful George Washington Parkway.  By design, there are no traffic lights, no billboards and no trucks or commercial traffic allowed. Any drive to or from work that includes a stretch on the Parkway makes the rest of the trip more bearable.  The area is well-served by bus routes as well, filtering to the Huntington Metro stop, as well as direct routes to the Pentagon.
